Ozanam Inn Dedicates Dental Clinic to the Late Henry A. Gremillion, DDS, MAGD

Faculty and staff from LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry and Medicine joined Mrs. Karleen "Mackey" Gremillion and Ozanam Inn staff and volunteers to honor the memory of her late husband, Dr. Henry A. Gremillion. The ceremony to dedicate the upgraded and expanded dental clinic was held on March 7, 2022 at Ozanam Inn's new home on Poydras Street. Dr. Gremillion, who served as the LSUSD Dean from 2008 until his death in May 2020, was instrumental in establishing the dental clinic at the Inn nearly a decade ago.

With the support of a generous donation from Zimmer Dental Company, the dental operatory was constructed and equipped in 2013. Drs. Sherrod Quin and Suzanne McCormick volunteer to supervise dental school students at the Inn on Saturday mornings. Both helped to launch the effort with Dr. Gremillion to strengthen the educational and community outreach mission of the dental school.

"Dr. Gremillion was truly admirable in his efforts to assist the residents of Ozanam Inn," said Ozanam Inn Chief Executive Officer Clarence Adams. "We are so excited to honor his work an dedicate our new, expanded dental clinic in his name. From the beginning of the partnership, it was a joy hearing from Dr. Gremillion that there was a waitlist of student volunteers -- all waiting for an opportunity to join us and assist our residents." Mackey Gremillion also shared how much it means to her and the family that Henry will always be remembered in such a meaningful way. Mr. Adams presented Mackey with a large bouquet of flowers to honor Dr. Gremillion's commitment to caring for the homeless through Ozanam Inn. Dr. Sandra Andrieu, Interim Dean of LSU Health School of Dentistry, recalled humble beginnings. She relayed her history with Ozanam Inn and her father's commitment to helping those facing tough times. The Dental clinic at Ozanam Inn is proof of Dr. Gremillion's legacy of touching the lives of those less fortunate.

LSUSD Dental Hygiene Students and Faculty Revive Easter Basket Program

The LSU Student Chapter of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association is working to make Easter a bit brighter for some area children. The group is partnering with Covenant House of New Orleans, a local non-profit that provides food, shelter and other resources to young people in need. The goal is to make 50 baskets filled with Easter goodies. Some of the items needed are children’s toothbrushes and toothpaste, chocolate bunnies, plastic eggs, coloring books and pacifiers. Dental hygiene student volunteer, Megan Callahan is excited to be a part of this initiative, “this project is very exciting for us because it is really important to give back to our community and help make these children’s smiles a little brighter. We are having a great turnout so far with donations and are excited to see everything come together when we make our delivery shortly before Easter!” The event was on a hiatus since Spring of 2019 and the start of COVID. “We are so happy to finally get back out in the community to do projects like this,” says Associate Professor of Dental Hygiene, Tricia Barker. The deadline to donate is April 1st. There is a donation box on the 1st floor of the LSUSD Administration Building.
